Welcome Back Lander Students!

So excited to see Greenwood buzzing with all the new and returning Lander students this week!  As you guys get back in the groove, I wanted to let you know about a few things for college students:

  1. RELI 101 – I still have some openings at TR 1:15-2:45 for my Religions course I teach.  Would love to see you in there!
  2. BCM – Scott Smith and the gang are having some free BBQ tonight at the center at 5:30.  Their services kick off Thursday at 9pm, and the following 2 Thursdays, I get the privilege of speaking – can’t wait to see you there!
  3. College Lunch – This Sunday, we are having a free homecooked meal for college students after our 11:15 service (around 12:30).  Come on out, we would love to have you!
  4. NS College Group – Starting next Wednesday night, I am leading a college Bible study at North Side I would love you to be a part of.  We are meeting in the Family Life Center at 8pm on September 8th.  Bring a Bible, bring a friend, and we are going to get after it – can’t wait to spend this semester doing some serious discipleship with college students.

Any questions on how you can get involved or serve in any of these areas, please comment and I will get back to you!

Irrational Animals

Bold, arrogant people! They do not tremble when they blaspheme the glorious ones; 11 however, angels, who are greater in might and power, do not bring a slanderous charge against them before the Lord. 12 But these people, like irrational animals—creatures of instinct born to be caught and destroyed—speak blasphemies about things they don’t understand, and in their destruction they too will be destroyed, 13 suffering harm as the payment for unrighteousness. They consider it a pleasure to carouse in the daytime. They are blots and blemishes, delighting in their deceptions as they feast with you, 14 having eyes full of adultery and always looking for sin, seducing unstable people, and with hearts trained in greed. Accursed children!

(2 Pet. 2:10b-14, HCSB)

God hates sin.  He is especially appalled when sin takes place in the lives of his children.  Unfortunately, believers often categorize sin.  We tend to think of certain sins as more evil than others.  We see other sins as not so severe.

We live in a culture that diminishes the seriousness of sin.  Lying to another person has been reduced to “a little white lie.”  Sexual advances to a coworker is simply labeled as harmless flirting.  People follow their desires and either claim that was just the way they were made or that the devil made them do it.

In this passage, Peter leaves no room for question at how God sees sin.  He hates it.  Sin is simply when people believe like irrational animals.  They follow their appetites.  They see something that they want, and they are fixated on possessing it.  The ability to rationalize is one of the things that is supposed to differentiate animals from human beings.  A dog is not expected to have the rational skills to understand not to steal food from another dog.  A human being is expected to have the rational skills to understand that they can’t act upon every instinct that they experience.

Peter classifies such living as bold, arrogant, blasphemous, slanderous, irrational, carousers, deceivers, seducers, unstable, and so much more.  As believers in Christ, we cannot act on every craving we experience.  King David’s irrational behavior brought about many consequences.  His sin started when he wanted something that didn’t belong to him and he took it (2 Samuel 11).  God punished David for such actions and we won’t get off the hook either.

Today, realize that you are a child of God with the Holy Spirit inside you.  Do not act on every whim like irrational animals.  Fight against the sinful self-indulgence tendencies and choose true freedom in Christ.

Expected to Grow

What a great day as we concluded “Solitary Confinement.”

We’ve encouraged people to join community groups, but we’ve never really expected people to join.  If God expects us to grow, and he uses relationships to help us grow, then shouldn’t we make Christian relationships a priority?

Versus hyping people up today and trying to get them to join a community group, we decided to do something unthinkable: cut the service short and sign them up while they were all here!  Don’t get used to shorter services, though!  Jamie Parler, our Community Pastor, gave a short message that really drove it home.  God expects us to grow, and we grow in the confines of Christian relationships, so go sign up now!

The picture above shows what a really effective invitation looks like – giving people a specific, clear way to respond right then and there!  Praise God for the OVERWHELMING response!

The testimonies during “I Need You to Survive” also really drove the message home today!  Life change is happening all around us!

Today, we worshiped to:

If you didn’t say yes during the invitation today, it’s not too late to sign up for a group!  Or you can watch some of the service here.

A Week With North Side Worship

As a part of the training I provided at the Worship Summit this weekend, I put together this video from my phone to show what a week looks like as I prepare a bunch of musicians, vocalists, and technicians to prepare to lead worship.

Watch the behind the scenes footage of how North Side Worship gets ready to lead each week.  http://northsideworship.com
